How to use SquareKicker on client websites (from build to handoff)

Designing a Squarespace website for a client is one thing — handing it off smoothly is another.

With the SquareKicker Extension, you get flexible options for managing access, subscriptions, and ownership, so you can focus on building stunning websites without getting stuck in messy handovers.

In this guide, we’ll walk through how to use SquareKicker on client projects — from setup to final delivery.

Understand who can use SquareKicker

Before you start building, it’s important to know who can access the SquareKicker tools.

SquareKicker relies on Squarespace’s code injection area, which means:

  • Only Admin and Owner permission levels can use the tools

  • Other roles (like Website Editor) cannot access the SquareKicker UI

However, any customizations you create:

  • Are visible to all users

  • Still appear on the live site and in the editor

Quick tip:
If your client can’t see the SquareKicker icons, it’s usually a permissions issue.

Choose the right pricing plan

SquareKicker offers flexible pricing depending on how you work.

Here’s how to choose:

  • Solo plan
Best for working on a single site

  • Professional (multi-site) plan
More cost-effective if you’re managing multiple projects (3 or more sites). Choose from Designer or Agency. Unlimited number of sites in each plan. 10/25 active sites.

This flexibility makes it easy to scale your workflow as your client base grows.

Build freely — your designs stay put

Your design changes stay on the site, even if your subscription ends.

If a subscription is:

  • Cancelled

  • Expired

  • Or the site is set to inactive

Then:

  • The SquareKicker tools are disabled

  • You can’t make new edits

  • But all existing designs remain fully visible

This means your client doesn’t need to pay ongoing fees just to keep the design live.

Manage active and inactive sites

If you're working across multiple projects, this is where things get powerful.

With Designer or Agency plans, you can:

  • Set completed sites to inactive

  • Free up space for new projects

  • Reactivate sites anytime for updates

Why this matters:

  • You don’t need to pay for every site all the time, or add a whole month subscription to make a few tweaks

  • You can jump back into a project whenever needed

It’s a simple way to manage a full pipeline of client work without unnecessary costs.

Start new projects without friction

Starting another site?

  • On a Solo Plan → add a new site by starting another subscription

  • On a Designer/Agency Plan → just add a new site (no extra cost). You may need to make a previous build inactive to free up space for the new build. This is a simple toggle on/off in the Dashboard.

Upgrade and consolidate

If you’ve been using multiple solo plans, you can simplify things by upgrading. This is the most cost-effective plan if you’re building 3 or more sites. You can transfer your exisiting sites to the Designer subscription.

Move to a Designer Plan to:

  • Manage all sites under one subscription

  • Make tweaks or updates to your sites without having to subscribe to a plan for a whole month

  • Keep everything organised in one place

  • Streamline billing and workflow

Hand off the website to your client

When the project is complete, you have two main options:

Option 1: Keep control

  • You manage the subscription

  • Client uses the finished site

  • Reactivate tools later if needed

Option 2: Transfer ownership

  • Client takes over SquareKicker access

  • They choose whether to continue a subscription

The transfer process is simple:

  • Enter your client’s email in the dashboard
    or

  • Let them request ownership

Either way, all your customizations remain live during and after the transfer.

Know what happens after handoff

Once the site is delivered:

  • The design stays exactly as you built it

  • SquareKicker tools are only needed for future edits

  • The client is not locked into ongoing costs

If you (or your client) want to make changes later:

  • Just reactivate a subscription or make the site active if it is part of your professional plan

  • Jump back into the tools instantly

SquareKicker is designed to speed up your workflow — not slow it down with clunky handoffs.

With flexible permissions, scalable pricing, and simple ownership transfer, you can:

  • Build high-impact websites

  • Deliver them confidently

  • Stay in control of your workflow

So you can focus on what matters most — creating websites that truly wow your clients.
